The mission of the members of A.B.A.T.E. of Illinois is to preserve the universal right to a safe, unrestricted motorcycling environment, and to propose and advocate actions that can be taken by elected and appointed officials to protect and conserve the natural resources of the State of Illinois, and ensure through professional management that sustainable use, recreational opportunities and enjoyment of these new resources is available for this and future generations.

RIGHT NOW WE NEED TO LET OUR SENATORS KNOW THAT WE MEAN BUSINESS WHEN IT COMES TO SENATE HELMET BILL SB1351. Check out the flyer below.

Attention All Bikers

EMERGENCY HELMET BILL ALERT ‐ SB1351

Senate  leader  John  Cullerton  removed  a  Senator  off  the   Public  Health  Committee  and  replaced  him  with  Senator  Donne  Trotter,  sponsor  of  SB1351  (motorcycle  rider  helmet  bill).   The  bill  was  voted  on  and  passed  out  of  committee  and  is  on  its  way  to  a  full  Senate  vote.

*THINGS  YOU  MUST  DO  IF  YOU  WANT  TO  KEEP  ILLINOIS  A  HELMET  FREE  STATE*

1.   CALL  and  FAX  Senator  Donne  Trotter  and  express  your  dissatisfaction  with  him  for  introducing  this  Helmet  Bill,  SB1351.   Please make  an  attempt  to  be  nice  to  him.   Have  everyone  you  know  call  him.   We want to shut  his  phone  lines  down!   We  want  his  staff  to  take  up  all  of  their  time  on  this  bill.

REPEAT  –  call  and  recall  until  we  shut  his  lines  down.   That is how  we  do  it.

2.   CALL  and  FAX  your  respected  Senator  and  urge  him  to  vote  against  this  Helmet  Bill,  SB1351.   Whatever  your  reason  is  for  opposing  Helmet  Laws,  tell  them  and  be  sure  to  tell  them  this  is  a  personal  choice  issue  and  you  do  not  think  our  government  has  any  business  telling  us  how  to  dress.  Be  nice  to  your  Senators,  they  are  motorcycle  friendly  and  are  our  friends,  but  you  must  call  them.   They  MUST  hear  from  you.

Call your state senator and encourage them to vote

Talking points:

There is no scientific evidence that helmets save lives

More motorcyclists die while wearing helmets than without helmets even though there are more choice (helmet free) states than mandatory helmet law states.

Motorcyclists are just as likely to have insurance as car and  truck drivers do.

Accidents are not caused by not wearing helmets.

At our March meeting we had some great turn out of members and we also had several guest speakers.

Butch Mathis, the Mayor of Wamac (who is also a member)was on hand to receive the Friends of Freedom award on behalf of the City of Wamac. He also told us a little about a dedication ceremony that will be held in the Wamac City Park on March 25th, 2009. The ceremony is a tribute to the coal miners who lost their lives in 1947 at 3:27pm.If you would like more information please call the Wamac City Hall.

We also had Newt Kindle, a former Freedom Riders President but still a member who now has some political aspirations. He is running for KC Board. Check out his picture in this newsletter.

Also speaking was one of our newest members, who has returned from serving his country and has settled in to being a recruiter for the Army, Scott Whitlock. Scott is one of several working on a program to let the public see the good side of the Army and all the help the do, not just what the media wants to report. Good luck with your program, Scott.

The Chapter 27 President Mick Eddington and the lovely Tracy also joined us. We are trying to get together with our surrounding ABATE Chapters and support as many of their events as possible. We will give you a schedule of their events as well as Shoal Creeks in next month’s newsletter.

Congratulations to Clifford (Dog ) White, Karchmer Pipe Supply and The City of Wamac on your Friends of Freedom Awards and to David Segar on winning the monthly drawing.

A special thanks to Fletcher for being so great. You have been such a big help to myself, Jeanette and Monie. We love and appreciate all your dedication.

We a have a few members that need some well wishes, Dee (Mama JoJo)

DeChausse, Jerri George and Di Corzine. We hope you all get well soon and know that Freedom Riders are thinking of you.
