SAFETY & EDUCATION PROGRAM
ON SEPTEMBER 2ND, I MAILED ONE DOZEN LETTERS TO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS DRIVERS EDUCATION INSTRUCTORS IN OUR AREA TO KICK OFF THE MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS PROGRAM FOR ABATE.
I HAVE ALREADY BEEN CONTACTED BY SOUTH CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL IN FARINA. THEY HAVE 3 CLASSES FOR ME TO DO ON SEPTEMBER 8TH. THERE WILL BE ABOUT 80 STUDENTS INVOLVED.
THE PROGRAM IS ABOUT 40 MINUTES LONG, CONSISTING OF A QUIZ OF 12 QUESTIONS, AN 8-10 MINUTE FILM ON HOW MOTORCYCLES OPERATE ON ROADS & HIGHWAYS, AND A QUESTION & ANSWER PERIOD THAT CAN BE QUITE INTERESTING.
I HAVE DONE CLASSES AS FAR AWAY AS WALTONVILLE, OKAWVILLE, TRENTON & IN BREESE.
IF THIS PROGRAM HELPS ONE YOUNG PERSON TO DRIVE MORE ALERT AND MORE OBSERVANT OF MOTORCYCLES IT HAS DONE A GOOD JOB .
I HAVE ALSO BEEN ASKED TO MAKE UP & DO A PROGRAM ON ATV SAFETY FOR SALEM JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL IN NOVEMBER. I AM WORKING ON THIS NOW & WILL HAVE READY BY NOVEMBER 7TH TO DO. THIS WAS REQUESTED BY THE SCHOOL.
IF THIS PROGRAM WORKS OUT I WILL ALSO PUT THIS PROGRAM AVAILABILITY OUT TO ALL SCHOOLS THAT I DO NOW.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

Hey everybody, how have you been enjoying the riding time? I hope all the fathers had a wonderful day and your families let you know how great you are like every other day.
The weekend of the 20th, we had the State Party. Personally it was my first and I had the greatest time. During the field events our team of guys won the outhouse event and they done a great job! Congrats to Ty, Jason, Tobie, Timmy and Bobby on your time of 30.8 seconds. Freedom Riders broke a record of having the most members at State Party and those who stepped up to help out at the gate, products, security and the bike show your support was greatly appreciated . For those of you who missed it Smurf sprouted during this time and took everybody by surprise.
We had the Murray Run and the weather was a little iffy but it turned out to be a great riding day. After sign up we had our annual meet and greet and I know the residents are so thankful and isn’t it amazing how they never judge anyone and the joy on their faces will just melt your heart. We raised $2000 with the following donations from Ed Pursley, Denver Sullens, Ed Winegarner, Bob Dodson, Troy Daughtery, Kaskaskia Valley ,Susan Beals, Terry Cook, Jim Fletcher and the American Legion Riders Post 4 from Wichita Kansas. Thank You all and may your lifes be so blessed. Our trophy winners for the run were 1st place Harry Buchanan 2nd place went to Brenda Quinn and 3rd place was Lynette Murray. I personally want to thank Little A’s, Jerrys Polebarn , Beckys Bar Slo Joes Poplar place and the Salem Police.
July 11th we had our Back to School Jam with the Bands to raise money for the back to school program and I want to thank Expert Tire, Sonic Drive In , Leetronics, Schnucks, Perks Music, WDML106.9, WDLJ97.5, JSM Concessions, Bob Lograsso, Greg Calvert, and Chris Rife. This money is so very important for those kids in need when school starts up and we raised over $500.
This month has been busy but keep your eyes in tuned to the newsletter for the July Events. Pac Run is coming up and this is a very important run for our Chapter we need help at the gate and with sign up so if you can’t do the run please contact Fletcher or Murphy to volunteer. This run is always a success and I’m sure this year won’t be any different. Ride safe and look for all the pleasures great and small

MUST BIKERS WEAR HELMETS?

IN THE LAST 10 YEARS, THE NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLE FATALITIES HAS INCREASED 125% (AND 300%FOR RIDERS OVER AGE 50), WITH MORE THAN 4800 DEATHS IN 2006.
OF THOSE KILLED 42% WERE NOT WEARING HELMETS.
“About 700 lives a year could be saved if people wore their helmets,” says Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters, an avid biker.
CURRENTLY, JUST 20 STATES REQUIRE HELMETS FOR RIDERS OF ALL AGES, & LOUISIANA IS CONSIDERING REPEAL OF its HELMET LAW FOR ADULTS.
PROPONENTS OF THE CHANGE SAY THE DECISION TO WEAR A HELMET IS A MATTER OF PERSONAL FREEDOM.
SHOULD HELMETS BE REQUIRED BY LAW?

LEGISLATIVE

The MRFPAC reports that Rob Andrews (D-NJ) is looking to unseat long time US Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) in that state's
primary being held June 3rd. You may remember that Senator Lautenberg was the guy who wrote letters to all of the states Governors asking them to help support a nation-wide helmet law. Good luck to Mr. Andrews. In other news the SIERRA CLUB is proposing that Illinois follow California's air resource board or (CARB). This would mean that cars sold in Illinois would be made for Illinois, jacking up the price of a new car by as much as $3000. ABATE opposes HB 3424. Call your State Reps. and ask them to oppose it also.Remember, it's not the destination it's the journey.

We will be able to send care packages to a lot of local soldiers. These soldiers deserve so much for all they are doing to safe keep our freedom. Freedom Riders Chapter is very proud to be able to make a lot of soldiers time overseas a little brighter with our care packages.

Added HyperText Markup Language (HTML) code for google analytics to all pages of the website. Pages were then published and uploaded to the server. This will keep track of the use of the website such as overall visits to the website and unique users. For example you may have 700 overall total visits in a month, but only 150 unique visitors. That means the 150 vistors keep coming back to make the 700 overall total visits.

Vice Presidents Report
I hope everyone had a great holiday season and all your dreams will come true in the New Year. I, also hope you are all ready for a great 2008 for Freedom Riders.
I would like to thank Patti Hahn for speaking at our meeting. Patti Hahn is a democrat running for State Representative of the 107th district. If you didn’t know Patti is the candidate endorsed by ABATE of Illinois, Inc.
I explained about our monthly drawing that we are starting in last month’s newsletter. If any of you want to be in the monthly drawing please contact me at 204-9284 by January 21st so I can get the tickets ordered. If you have any questions please feel free to call also. We will start the drawing in March so I will have the tickets available at the February meeting and I will let you know all the places where you can pick up your ticket in the next newsletter.
We have most of Freedom Riders activities schedule set up and I can’t wait to get everything kicked off. We are going to get back to the basics of what A.B.A.T.E. is all about. We have to take care of business.
I hope to see everyone at the broomstick pool tourney. (Check out the flyer in this newsletter)If you haven’t ever been in a broomstick tournament you need to try it out. It has nothing to do with your pool skills.
I know everyone is out riding and enjoying the un-seasonally warm weather we are having. I hope everyone is extra safe when riding.
Take care,
MiMi Hawkins
